August, 2012

August 7, 2012 was the day of my last workout.

I started working out regularly in March of 2008. I was the heaviest I had ever been (220 lbs / 100 kg).

I stuck with it for more than four years.

I lost fat, and gained muscle.

It was great.

But, in August of 2012, I had surgery to repair an umbilical hernia (for the second time), and I stopped working out.

This wasn't the first time I had faced an involuntary layoff. The hernia was repaired for the first time in April of 2011, and I broke my ankle later that same year (in October).

I came back from those.

2011 also saw me made a partner at work, but the resulting workload was not crushing.

I think the real trouble was that I dismantled my pull-up bar in preparation for renovations to our living room.

I hung that pull-up bar in March of 2008, six months after I decided I would start doing SimpleFit—even after resolvng to start, it took me a while to do so.

Having been slow to start working out in the first place, I should not have been surprised that having blown up my fitness life, it would take me a while to put it back together.

The first thing I need is a pull-up bar. There are other exercises, but I like pull-ups.

The living room is unfinished, so I can't put my bar there. But, last fall, we had our basement excavated to increase its headroom. A sump pit with three pumps and a battery back-up was installed address the wet soil. A new concrete slab was put down. It's dry down there, and I can stand up!

Today, I measured and sketched, and then I took those measurements and sketches to a friend, so he can fabricate a new pull-up bar for me.

One Week Later

I picked up the bar today!

Sweet T.
